Thanks to my lovely wife I got a night to myself, away from kids and responsibilities.  I closed up in a coffee shop and dedicated myself to my favourite creative pursuit.  Have a read and let me know what you think in the comments.  Thanks for taking to time to explore my work.

“This is probably a waste of time.

So much of our time and effort and resources have all been for nothing, so I feel this small waste of time is only fitting.  We conquered the stars, we escaped the death of our own planet.  I guess if you are still out there somewhere and you somehow get this message…  maybe you can learn something from it.”

I am enjoying a return to writing and hopefully will have opportunity to stretch my creative needs more often.  Thank you for your interested and for accepting the sporadic nature of the updates on this site.

Weather When Requested

“That’s impossible!”

A slow grin crept onto the face of Cecil Leach, a climate scientist and hobbyist inventor.  Mostly a homebody, he occasionally liked to hang out in coffee shops and people-watch.  Lost in his own world, typing away on his laptop, he was startled by the quizzical proddings of a young woman that, even at first glance, appeared to be his polar opposite.

Eden Teller had a bright streak of green in her wild hair, unapologetic horn rimmed glasses and she seems to be wearing every conceivable colour at once.  She had an infectious smile and evidently harboured no hesitation in walking up to a complete stranger, mid work-flow, and asking: Read the rest of this entry »

Sorry it has been so long since the last story, I have two small children and by the end of a typical day I don’t have much headspace for creative thought.  I want to get back into it though so I dedicated a short block of time to get something out there.  Hope you like it, let me know what you think.

“Man, I remember a hidden track on a Tool CD that I used to listen to, let me see if I can pull it up…  Here it is, listen to this.”

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber.
And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself.
And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own Midwest.
And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil.
One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possessed me then

And I begged, “Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?”

And the angel said unto me, “These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots!
You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust.”

And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared,
“Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you!
Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!”

“That concept always stuck with me, you know?  We know that animals have a consciousness, but we still eat cow, pigs and chickens.  We just give it different names so that we don’t feel as bad and associate what we are eating with the animal it once was.  We call our food Poultry, Pork, Beef, Venison even Mutton, you wouldn’t call an adult sheep a mutton.”

“What are you talking about man?”

“Then we have vegetarians, sure they all do it for different reasons but a large portion don’t eat meat because it means killing animals.”

“Dude, are you going somewhere with this rant?”

“Vegans, they won’t even eat the by-product of an animal due the amount of cruelty the animal often goes through.”

“Why are you talking about vegans?”

“We didn’t know man.  How could we have known?!  I mean, when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense, but who thinks about this sort of thing?”

“You need to start making some sense pretty soon pal, this little rant of yours is crossing the line into annoying.  It isn’t a long trip from annoying to angering.”

“Fine.  OK.  Do you know what I do for a living?”

“You work with plants?”

“… I am a Botanist, it’s like a Biologist but I specialize in plants.  Specifically, I have spent my life working on gauging plant’s reactions to their environment.”

“Is that like that thing where they play classical music to some plants and heavy metal to others and see if they grow differently?”

“… Sure… Something like that.  Look, it gets a little more complicated but I won’t go too deep into that, that isn’t the focus here.  I stumbled onto something, something big, something that the whole world needs to know about but I have no idea how to convince them.”

“Ok man, First thing, settle down.  An important step towards being convincing is not acting like a raving lunatic.  How about this, how about you convince me?”

“Convince you?”

“Well, I still don’t know what we are talking about, I fix computers for a living and know basically nothing about plants.  We have known eachother for a couple years but that is mostly because hang out at the same bar.  I am the perfect person to practice on, convince me.”

“…OK, let’s do it.  So let me describe some character…”

“Wait!  I am going to need another beer first.”

“…”

“K, shoot.”

“You’re ready?”

“Yeah man, I am all ears.”

“Here we go.  I will describe a set of characteristics for an organism and let you define it.  Imagine something that consumes nutrients and water and excretes waste as long as it is kept safe and warm.  Something that grows larger when conditions are ideal and adapts and reacts when that balance is off.  Something that expands and replicates to fill the space allotted to it.  Something that can adapt to its environment and create defense mechanisms to protect itself from predators.  Something with preferences and desires that it seeks out.  Now imagine that this organism can live in communities and get along with other organism and thrive, but put it together with incompatible organisms and they will fight for resources, until the victor has spread into the defeated enemy’s land.  Do you have a picture in your head?  Tell me about the organism that you mentally painted while hearing that.”

“That just sounds like life man.  That could be a wolf or a spider or a human being.”

“I was describing a blackberry plant”

“What!?”

“Do you know what consciousness is?  It is more often defined by philosophers and religious leaders than scientists but there is a common scientific understanding.  Picture an apple in your head, now let’s compare that to how a digital camera processes a picture of that same apple.

The camera analyses what it sees, pixel by pixel and does its best to create a perfect copy of every fleck of colour it saw.  There are some cool software tricks that we can use like facial recognition but for the most part the camera has no idea what it just took a picture of.

You on the other hand, picturing that apple in your head.  Sure you can see a similar image of the apple but there is a lot more to it.  You can likely imagine what the apple tastes like and your brain associates that apple with sustenance.  You see it as food and as such there is an emotional and primal response in your body to the apple.  You see information and then you react accordingly.

That is what separates a conscious being from an unconscious machine.”

“This is getting really deep for bar talk, man.”

“I know, I’m sorry, but this is important.  We accept that a lioness will look at a zebra and recognize it as more than simply a black and white horse.  She sees food for her pride, she recognizes that food source as pivotal to survival so she risks expending a considerable amount of energy to achieve that food.  For this we respect lions and recognize them as conscious living creatures, right?”

“I mean, sure.”

“So why not a sunflower turning to follow the sunlight?  Is that not expended energy and movement because the plant recognized the sun as a food source and hunted it down in its own way?  But we don’t look at a flower and call it a conscious creature.”

“You’re not suggesting…”

“Yes, I am.”

“But surely…”

“Nope.”

“So you mean…”

“Allow me to explain if I may.  Consciousness is a very difficult thing to prove, even in our fellow humans.  There is a fairly selfish thought process, shared by some people, that causes them to think they are the only one with a true consciousness and everyone around them is simply, set dressings.  The whole world exists only as a playground or stage for them to experience.  Those people have trouble believing that other humans have conscious thought.  They are on the extreme but they exist.

Most people accept that all humans are conscious being sharing the planet.  The next step is to understand that animals have a consciousness as well.  Easy to accept for your domestic dog or cat but a much harder pill to swallow when you think about livestock.  This is one of reasons many people turn to vegetarianism.

Even then animals are broken into classes.  A huge portion of catch-and-release fishermen firmly believe that fish don’t feel pain, so it is no problem when you jab them with a hook and pull them out of their environment for sport.  There is, of course, no evidence to support this claim.

We have a harder time understanding life that looks less like us.  On the small scale this can be white people not sympathising with people in the middle-east due to skin colour and religion, but let’s stick to animals and plants.  We are more than happy to eat cows since we appear quite different than cows but there are still many similarities.  Four limbs and a similar spine supporting a main torso, separated head with two ears, two eyes, two nostrils and a mouth.  Sure they have four stomachs but you can’t see that on the outside.”

“Where are you going with all of this?”

“OK, plants don’t look like us.  Trees don’t have knees, a flower doesn’t have eyes, a blackberry plant doesn’t have a mouth.  Therefore we don’t sympathize with them or think about them as animals or having consciousness or feelings.  The fact that we don’t think about it does not automatically mean that it is true.”

“Wow, I am going to need several more beers won’t I?  Do you want something?”

“Whiskey please, I could use some whiskey”

“Coming up.”

“So what I was saying is…”

“Wait, before we go on, I want to ask a question.  Are you suggesting that all plant life, every tree and blade of grass, is a living, thinking, potentially emotionally complex organism?  That a carrot feels fear as the farmer pulls it from the ground?”

“Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.”

“That is fucked up man.”

“Don’t you think I know that?  I have spent the last two years of my life trying to disprove this theory.  You see, usually a scientist tries to remain neutral and unbiased and simply observe and record the findings.  Once this idea dawned on me I dedicated my life to proving it wrong.  I have failed.  Every test and experiment I have run suggests that not only are plants very capable of independent thought, but they seem to communicate to each other.  Some plants get along with others and some fight and overtake land and resources from their enemies, almost like they have personality conflicts.

Weeds are simply opportunistic assholes that starve less robuste plants and choke the life out of them to gain ground.

Not all plants are as capable of direct action but look at the infamous venus fly trap; there is no doubt that it has the power to act and move to consume prey.  Venus Fly Trap is the most famous of over 750 species of carnivorous plants.  It may be easier to start by explaining the consciousness of plants like these.

Scientifically however, there is no real difference in consciousness between them and a blade of grass.  The difference is simply that the blade of grass lacks the ability to move and react in a way humans can perceive.”

“…You can’t tell people this.”

“What do you mean?”

“Despite massive evidence and 98% of climate scientists lobbying the public there is still a large swathe of the population that doesn’t believe in climate change.  You can’t take that same group of people and tell them… not to step on grass for fear of crushing plants that feel pain.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“…Ok, I won’t profess to know what you should do.  That is… fucked.  But, I will offer advice on what you should not do.  Do not hold a big press conference or publish a paper that shares this revelation with the public.  Maybe this is something you can get together with fellow botanists on and get a profession wide consensus moving forward.”

“They won’t do it.”

“Why?!”

“There is not a lot of money in botany, it can be hard to get research grants and even then they are usually contingent on you discovering something that can be leveraged commercially.  A new product or drug or something that can be sold to get a return on investment.  Typically botanists are either chasing a goal to justify their funding or trying to get a new research contract.  Coming forward with culture changing news that is… inconvenient at best, would be career suicide.

Look at climate science as an example.  While it is true that 98% of climatologists have clear evidence of human-caused climate change, that means that people can still turn to the 2% of scientists that support not changing their way of life.  If there is an option to not change, people will always choose that.  I would be amazed if I found a few allies in this venture, I would never come close to the 98% that climatologists accomplished.”

“Then you have a choice between two courses of action.  One: you come out with this information and share your findings with the world and be prepared to commit, career suicide, as you said.  Two: bury it, forget the last two years of your life and move on to something else.  Share your findings with no one.”

“…I don’t know if I can ever go back from knowing what I know now, but I don’t have the stamina or financial well-being to endure that kind of fight.  There is no way I can weather a storm like that on my own.   W-What do I do?”

“Maybe I can help.  I am a computer and tech guy, whatever, not important.  Maybe there is a way you can put the information out there for people to see and follow-up on, without burning your name and becoming a pariah.  Do you have lots of data from your work?  Journals, notes, pictures and video, something we can share.”

“Sure, but it is a jumbled mess.”

“Then clean it up and bring it all to me.  I will digitize it and get your fingerprints off things, then build you an anonymous website.  A place you can spread the word without the need for a face or name to stand behind it.  Let the people decide what should be done with this information.”

“What should we call it?”

“Something like this, it might be best to hit the nail on the head. PlantsHaveAConsciousness.com.  I will get to work on the site if you will prepare the data.”

“Hey, thank you for listening, I was beginning to think I had gone crazy, I have spent too much time around plants lately.  I… I kind of lost touch with humanity.”

“My pleasure, have a good night.”

Watching his pub friend leave to gather his notes, phil pulls out his phone and starts a call.

“Director, you were right.  He knows.”

This story is somewhat inspired by documentaries such as Cut Poison Burn and Food Matters and somewhat inspired by the mere idea of looking for alternate solutions to complex problems.  As a technician I once stayed up for days trying to fix a complex Radar system while at sea.  In the end the problem was solved when I talked through the fault with a steward on board, someone with no formal electronics training.  Sometimes problems just need that outside eye to come up with a solutions that would never have arisen on its own.  I hope you enjoy reading it, if you do please share it with someone and leave a comment.  Thank you for your time.

Leave it to the Professionals

“Vitamin C.  Do you know what it does?” Posed the somewhat unkempt man at the Feed your Soul nutrition store.  To say the store wasn’t corporate would be a massive understatement.

“Well, it prevents Scurvy, so that’s good.” Replied Laura Shandler, a 45 year old confirmed bachelorette with no children who had been called kooky so often, she had begun to intentionally embody the term.

“We only know that because Vitamin C deficiencies lead to Scurvy.  Fact is, that is how we know what all vitamins do.  Deprive the body of any nutritional metric and you will start to see it break down.  In the case of Vitamin C you lose enzyme reactions, one such reaction leads to an inability to make new collagen or heal wounds, that’s what leads to the symptoms of what we call Scurvy.”

“Okay…”

“But that doesn’t really answer our question does it?  The AMA would have you believe that process elimination is enough to understand the true nature of something.  Without nutrients we die, without certain specific nutrients, specific bodily functions start to breakdown.  Therefore, we assume the positive benefits of a substance to be the inverse of the negative side-effects produced by its deficiency.  It’s all a bit of a loop really, the piece that we are still missing is what these vitamins do for us, their real purpose.  We can only discover that by taking huge doses of one specific vitamin at a time, scientific method.” Read the rest of this entry »

Constrained Creativity

This will be the first in a series or perhaps a continuum of posts that are less like a short story and more like observations about the world around me and the strange little creatures that inhabit it called humans.  Most writers are people watchers, and people watchers see things from a different perspective.  That outside eye allows the beholder to evaluate aspects that the individual may never see about themselves.  I want to share some of the things I have learned by observing the world, some of the gems that help me write and some of the techniques that I use to be more productive and live a less stressed out life, no matter what comes my way.

The first concept I want to talk about is something I call Constrained Creativity.  Conventional wisdom suggests that the goal is to remove distractions and free your mind so that you can “let the creative juices flow”.  To some, if even the tiniest snag stands between them and a perfect creative moment (if such a thing exists) then the whole process shuts down.  I am here to tell you that this is all in your head.  That doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem or that you can easily get past it.    Read the rest of this entry »

Long while since my last story, I have been a sea quite a bit which I don’t find overly conducive to writing.  I had 80% of this story written for a long time and while visiting Portland Oregon I finally had some time in a couple of coffee shops to finish it and prepare it to be published.  It is a concept that fascinates me and that we are not far from, there are already several product coming to market that almost fit this description and I will be watching the market reaction closely.  This one is a little longer at about 4300 words, thanks for taking the time to read my work and visiting my site, I am grateful for the chance to share my stories.  Enjoy.

Ditch the plate, dine with Plait!

Around 1995 was the pinnacle of guilt-free eating, since then the other foot really fell in terms of the obesity epidemic and the long term health risks of certain foods.  As global communities grew in size and influence with the prevalence of the internet, access to information also grew.  This started with simple food information and a better understanding of food labels but in time proper nutrition was no longer something you needed a professional nutritionist to guide you through.  In the early 2000s online nutritional information made a shift, instead of just talking about how bad processed foods were or how much our eating habits were affecting out health, the topic changed to sharing information of good nutrition.  The word “Superfood” entered the global lexicon and the food industry was never the same.  Read the rest of this entry »

Hello all,

Back again for another story so soon, I had an inspired moment and found a new coffee shop that I really like so some writing happened.  Nikola Tesla has always been one of my favorite history figures so when my lovely wife suggested I make him part of my next writing prompt, ideas started to spin right away.  Please read on and enjoy, hopefully this sparks a fascination for Nikola Tesla in you, he is worth looking up.  Thanks for your readership.

Enjoy,

Drew

Angel Investor?

To say that Nikola Tesla was a strange man doesn’t quite cover it.  He had a very specific mental ability that set him apart from virtually every other person, living or dead.  He had the ability to prototype things in his mind, this meant that he could build complex engineering projects with thousands of moving parts by simply imagining it.  He could even troubleshoot problems and disassemble the machines to replace poorly designed parts so it would run more smoothly.  This meant that when he actually decided to build something, in the physical world, it had a tendency to work on the first try. Hello all, I was away sea so I apologize for the delayed post.  I really thought that Sea time would be conducive to writing but it doesn’t seem to work out that way.  I prefer to be in a dark room, with a hot cup of tea and the sounds of rain at my window or in a crowded coffee shop, fervently people-watching to help me build new characters.  Today’s sharing is not my best work but certainly a long way from my worst.  Hopefully you enjoy reading it, feel free to let me know what you think in the comments.  Thanks for your time, I know there are a lot of demands on it.

Rumours and Imaginations

Interstellar travel, it has piqued the minds of every person who has ever tilted their chin up and really had a look.  Throughout human history people have always looked to the stars.  At first they simply wondered what they were and in doing so made up fanciful stories of great beings and how it all came to be.  Once the discovery was made that those little twinkly lights were actual locations that you could conceivably travel to, the spark was lit.  Unfortunately it wasn’t long before it was also discovered that they are far away, really surprisingly stupefyingly inordinately far away.  Due to that ludicrous distance it was quickly discovered that humans don’t yet have the means to get there.  That didn’t stop the need to study them, after some time these oppressive distances could be calculated with an impressive level of accuracy but that only served to drive home just how unattainable these stars were to conventional forms of travel. Just Like in the Plan

Evolution is a time consuming process, adapting to changing environments takes generations, sometimes even millennia.  Deformities can creep up much faster, sometimes in a single generation.  Deformities by definition are isolated incidents but in the year 2054, some sort of genetic shift took place and similar deformities were seen all around the world.

This schism seemed to segregate the world’s population into two district groups.  Even a novice anthropology enthusiast could easily divine that the global dividing line was based on wealth.  The children of affluent or even middle class families were affected very differently than the worlds poor.  The ever present income gap rose and rose until there was virtually no similarities between the lives of the rich and the lives of the poor. I am sorry if this story took a while to get out but I set up another challenge for myself.  This time the whole story is being told entirely with dialog.  There isn’t a narrative word in the whole 2700, not is a “he said”, “she said”.  Hopefully that doesn’t disrupt the flow of the story too much.  Enjoy.

The Cost of Love

“Good evening gentlemen, if you would all please take your seats. The opening portion of these sorts of talks would normally start with an introduction and a quick telling of my background to justify what I am presenting. I think you will forgive my interest in privacy and permit a pseudonym for our interactions. Once I had completed my research I sought out a discrete group of ad men, if such a thing exists. We went through a battery of titles to present the product with: DR. Love was deemed too derivative, DR. Cupid was too cutesy, DR. Fix-up sounded like an after school TV program. In the end we settled on DR. Link, so from this point forward, all referrals and interactions shall refer my organization and indeed myself as DR. Link. Read the rest of this entry »

I can’t and wont guarantee this kind of update rate.  When writing strikes me I will indulge it, when I need to take care of other tasks, there may be a lull.  I am after all the father of a 13 month old, and that can take up a lot of time and energy.  At any rate, here is the next Multiversal Yarn.  Let me know what you think.

Arthur Wilson was an Electronic Engineer by trade and a noted inventor. His creations had provided a comfortable life; he often worked from a shop build into the home he shared with his wife Edna. They had a very happy marriage and before long Edna had become pregnant.

As an inventor and creator, the concept of teaming up with his spouse to create a new life was something that fascinated Arthur greatly. He went out of his way to look after his wife and made sure she wanted for nothing during the pregnancy. Any spare time however, was spent busily in his shop creating new products for their child and in time for the mass market of baby products. Read the rest of this entry »

I wanted to challenge myself to write a 3000+ word short story with absolutely no dialog, purely narrative driven.  Here is the result.  Hope you enjoy, please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Mental Prototype

In the late 20th century, we mapped the human genome it was a fantastic achievement. Who could have guessed what that would lead to? In the early 21st century in-utero genetic testing for defects and genetic diseases was the norm. There was however, a byproduct to this altruistic prevention of crippling disorders, there were other tools available in the human genome; This gave way to the so called “designer babies”.

It started with simple things like choosing your child’s eye colour, but it wasn’t long before someone found the genetic markers for metabolism and started to tweak resting musculature and body fat content. The paradigm shift however came when Dr. Arturo Blain found a way to alter the immune system’s response to wounds, diseases and even the effects of aging. Read the rest of this entry »

Through the Eyes of a Drone

A Multiversal Yarn by Drew Torchia

Bartholomew Alvarez was walking to work on a perfectly typical day. He worked for a problem solving think-tank organization knows as Unfuckers Inc. Because it was their business model to be “outside the box” thinkers, their rather non-PC name had granted them more business than it lost them. Bartholomew’s title on his business cards even listed him as a “Professional Unfucker”.

They had worked for major employers looking to downsize and be more efficient, small companies looking to keep up with modern technology but more than anything they worked with police and government authorities to evolve search and capture techniques, getting criminals off the streets faster than ever before. If everything worked smoothly the company would be bankrupts in days but in our busy modern reality, Unfuckers Inc. was an overnight success. Read the rest of this entry »

I have always been fascinated with the complexities of modern society.  It is interesting to think of all of the little innovations humans have brought to the world.  What would happen if they didn’t all happen in the exact order that they did?  What would happen if one new item was thrown in the mix?  Where would that leave us?  What would happen if “x” technology or geo-political movement were to happen today?

Multiverse theory suggests that every decision made by every human divides the universe into each of the possible outcomes of that choice.  There is a universe where you chose the green car instead of the silver one and that choice affected life in that universe.  I will endeavour to write short stories about these alternate histories and potential futures with the intent of eventually turning a selection of deserving tales into full novels.

I invite and encourage comments to tell me what stories you liked or dislike and what caused you to feel that way.  Feel free to propose ideas for future stories and let me know if you read one that you feel deserve the time and effort of writing a full novel.  Thanks for visiting.
